Parents should understand California child support guidelines
  |   Sep 18, 2020  |  Family Law

One of the most important things for parents to consider in a divorce is how they can protect the best interests of their children. Child support is a way for a noncustodial or lesser-earning parent to provide the other parent with additional funds to help with child-related needs. This includes childcare, clothing, food, insurance costs and more. It is important for parents to understand California child support guidelines and how the amount of support is determined.

Parents are responsible for financially supporting their children until they reach the age of 18. Over time, financial circumstances may change and child support orders may need to be modified. The custodial parent may need additional support if the child has new needs or the noncustodial parent now earns more money. The noncustodial parent may need to modify an order if he or she is unable to make payments due to unexpected circumstances.

California has specific guidelines used to determine the amount of child support a parent will have to pay. This can include the income of each parent, the number of children in the family, the needs of the kids, regular expenses and more. A parent has the right to pursue child support order that is fair and sustainable.

When in divorce court or in negotiations over the terms of a final order, it is critical to think long-term. Parents need to know what they should expect regarding child support and how they can pursue terms that will make sense well into the future. Before agreeing to anything, it may be helpful to seek the guidance of an experienced family law attorney.
