Actress Jurnee Smollet-Bell has started proceedings to end her marriage with Josiah Bell. They’ve been married for nearly 10 years. While the reasons for the divorce were not reported, the couple no doubt have a number of family law issues to resolve.

Bell has been an actress since childhood, her first claim to fame being a regular spot on the TV hit show, “Full House.” Most recently, she starred in “Birds of Prey,” the DC Comics team film. Bell is also the mother of a 3-year-old child, so she and Bell will have to resolve child custody issues, parenting time matters and child support payments with respect to their son.

The former couple was married in Oct. 2010 but have now decided to go their separate ways. They last posted on social media about one another in Oct. 2019 after a joint appearance on the red carpet. While some people might think that being young (Smollett is 33 and Bell is 37) and having only one child would help simplify divorce proceedings, every case is unique and what seems simple to some may be quite complex for others. Also, when both spouses are professionals, property division proceedings can become complicated.

If a California couple signed a prenuptial agreement before they married, it will likely have a significant impact on divorce proceedings. Without a prenup, family court judges in this state follow community property guidelines, typically splitting all marital property 50/50 between both spouses. Any concerned spouse with questions about assets, liabilities, child support or other divorce-related issues may request a meeting with an experienced family law attorney for support.
