There are unfortunately many victims of domestic abuse in Southern California. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. These statistics are horrifying, but luckily there are many wonderful organizations that help victims of domestic violence. In addition to these organizations, a victim may also want to explore how an attorney can help.

Obtain a restraining order

An attorney can help their client get the protection they need against their abuser. They can obtain a protection order so that the abuser has no contact with the victim or their family. The protection order can ban the abuser from having any contact with the victim or coming within a certain distance of them. This can help ensure their safety.

Get custody of the children

An attorney can help their client obtain custody of their children as well as child support from the other parent.

File for divorce

If the couple is married, an attorney can help their client file for divorce and seek spousal support and their share of the marital assets.

Communicate with the defendant

An attorney can be the go-between for their client and communicate with their client’s abuser and their attorney. This can ensure their client does not have any more conflict or chance of abuse.

File a lawsuit

An attorney can file a civil lawsuit against the abuser. The lawsuit can help their client recover compensation for medical expenses, financial loss, or pain and suffering caused by the abuse.
