A detailed parenting plan is better for everyone

Parents want what is best for their children, especially after a divorce. One of the ways many California parents do this is by opting to co-parent, a choice that requires both parents to work closely together long term. This is not easy for someone who must work closely with a difficult ex, and disputes and confusion can continue, even after a divorce is final. This is why it is important for a parenting plan to be as specific and clear as possible.

Whether co-parents get along or not, the terms of a parenting plan are important. For example, a parenting plan that is not detailed enough may result in fights over everything from time with the kids to pickup procedures. The more specific the custody order can be, the better it will be for every member of the family. This also protects the interests of the children in case one parent chooses to be difficult or manipulative.

California parents may want to consider what details will be necessary for their unique family situation. Where will children celebrate birthdays? How and when can they see grandparents? How will parents get children back and forth between homes? These questions and others can reveal what details are important and what will make the parenting arrangement run as smoothly as possible.

Specifics are important in any divorce order, but they may be especially critical in agreements that pertain to the children. The more detailed the plan, the more stability and peace of mind the kids will have. This will reduce the chance for conflict, confusion and stress for the parents as well.
