The right tool to make co-parenting work well

Working closely with one’s spouse after a divorce can be difficult, especially when it comes to navigating child custody matters. Co-parenting can be emotionally challenging, but this type of arrangement is often the most beneficial for the children. One way to make this work well is to utilize the benefits of a thoughtfully and carefully drafted parenting plan.

Benefitting families

There is no cookie-cutter parenting plan that will work for every California family. Each family should have a plan uniquely suited to the needs and objectives of the kids and the capabilities of the parents. Some of the things to take into consideration when drafting a custody and visitation plan include:

  • Work schedules of each parent
  • How kids will split time between the two homes
  • Ways to handle conflict when disagreements arise
  • Holiday visitation, summer vacations and school breaks
  • Relationships and visitation with extended family
  • Religious upbringing and educational decisions

Parenting plans that are thorough and detailed are more likely to address issues that could cause conflict later. This can reduce the chance parents will find themselves arguing and disagreeing after the divorce is final — something that can cause mental stress and emotional trauma for the kids.

Choosing peace

By working together to create a meaningful parenting plan, California parents can choose a more peaceful post-divorce future. Regardless of how each party feels, the ultimate goal is to choose terms that will protect the interests of the kids above all else. An assessment of the individual situation can help parents see how they can craft a plan that will be beneficial and sustainable long-term.
